On the palate, the Veuve Clicquot Grande Dame Champagne 1996 makes you feel a perfect harmony between the strength of Pinot Noir and the elegance of Chardonnay grapes. The Champagne is clear-cut and pure, perfectly balanced with a delightful silky smoothness and a dynamic, sparkling final edge - very typical of the 1996 vintage Champagnes.

Bouquet:  

Initially the nose of the Grande Dame 1996 is rich and intense, evoking fresh fruit (apricots, peaches from the vine, citrus fruits) and dried fruits (hazelnuts, marzipan). Typical Chardonnay characteristics come to the fore, with the arrival of floral and mineral aromas (acacia, ferns, chalk). By agitating the wine, scents of candied fruit (citrusfruits, apricots, quince) and aromas of mild spices & brioches emerge, to reappear later in the mouth, after rotating the wine for a few minutes more.

Appearance:  

This champagne is a pale gold-green Champagne with jade glints that are typical of the vintage.

Always known for its full-bodied, Pinot Noir-dominated Champagnes, Veuve continues this tradition with the 96 Dame. Its prestige cuvee, the Dame, is 65% Pinot Noir, 7% Pinot Meunier, and 28% Chardonnay, and is rich, broad-shouldered, toasty, and nutty, with excellent concentration of fruit and great length. A chewy, spicy Champagne that seemed to grow fresher as it opened in the glass. Really explosive on the aftertaste, finishing with a clinging quality and powerful spicy, nutty flavors. A major mouthful of Champagne, at its best at the dinner table. Displays the combination of high ripeness and high acidity of this vintage at its best.
